Hunter Valley Semillon, Yarra Valley and Tasmanian Pinot Noir, McLaren Vale Grenache and Margaret River Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blends all show another side of Australian wine. Ask a bottle-shop specialist for a regional example and describe the texture or flavour you prefer.

A grape name does not fix sweetness, body or price. Aromas that sound sweet, such as ripe peach or vanilla, do not by themselves tell you how much sugar remains in a wine.

Australian names and imported wines

Shiraz and Syrah name the same grape. You may see Syrah on Australian labels, often as a stylistic choice, but it is not a legally guaranteed flavour profile. French labels may lead with a region rather than the grape: Chablis is a useful Chardonnay reference, while northern Rhône Syrah can provide context for Shiraz.

These comparisons help explain a style; they do not mean a local bottle and an imported one taste identical. Use the region guide alongside the grape guides, and choose a wine to suit the food you are serving.

Sources and further reading

Sources checked 20 October 2026.

Wine Australia: grape variety modules

Wine Australia: six grape varieties

NHMRC: Australian alcohol guidelines

For adults aged 18+. Alcohol and health guidance.

Vinabox Australia Start with the grape, then look at the region and the way the wine was made.
