How to Use a Coravin: Step-by-Step Timeless Guide

A Coravin Timeless lets you pour a glass of wine without pulling the cork. A thin needle goes through the cork, argon gas from a capsule pressurizes the bottle, the wine flows out through the needle, and the natural cork closes back up when you remove it. The steps below follow Coravin's official US instructions for the Timeless range (Three+, Six+ and similar models), with notes on the mistakes that cause most problems.

Disclosure: Vinabox has no active US Coravin affiliate agreement. This guide summarizes the manufacturer's instructions checked on coravin.com on September 26, 2026; always follow the manual supplied with your system.

Before you start: which bottles work

Bottle Can you use Timeless?
Still wine with a natural cork Yes. This is what Timeless is designed for; Coravin says natural corks expand back after the needle is removed.
Synthetic cork You can pour, but Coravin states that the system will not reseal synthetic corks, so treat the bottle as opened.
Screw cap Only after replacing the original cap with a Coravin Timeless Screw Cap, following its separate instructions.
Sparkling wine No. Coravin sells a separate Sparkling system for that.
Thick wax under the foil (common on vintage Port) Coravin warns that a thick waxy disc can seriously damage the needle.
Cracked, chipped or damaged bottle No. The bottle is pressurized; use the supplied bottle sleeve and never use a damaged bottle.

If the cork moves or sinks when you push the needle in, Coravin notes that it is likely deteriorated. Stop and treat that bottle as a normal open bottle.

Step 1: Load an argon capsule

  1. While pushing the clamp release up, slide the SmartClamps all the way up.
  2. Unscrew the capsule cup. Do not unscrew a cup that still contains gas.
  3. Insert the round end of a new Coravin Pure argon capsule into the cup.
  4. Quickly screw the cup back onto the system until there is no gap and the cup is aligned.
  5. Slide the SmartClamps back down until they lock.
  6. Quickly press the trigger to release a short burst of gas.

Use only official Coravin Pure capsules, which Coravin says give up to about 15 glasses of 150 ml (5 oz) each with Timeless. The actual number depends on pour size and technique. Our capsule price guide and calculator shows what that means in dollars per pour.

Step 2: Insert the needle

Many users remove the foil from the top of the cork first, as in the Vinabox Six+ review (check your manual), then fit the bottle sleeve then align the SmartClamps over the neck of the bottle. Push down firmly on the handle in one fluid motion until the needle is fully inserted. Hesitating halfway is a common reason for cork crumbs in the needle.

Step 3: Pour

  1. Hold the bottle with one hand and the handle with the other. Do not hold the system by the capsule cup.
  2. Tilt the bottle, about 45 degrees according to Coravin, until the spout is over the glass.
  3. Quickly press and release the trigger. The wine pours after the trigger is released.
  4. If the flow slows before your glass is full, repeat the quick press and release.

Short presses are the key. Holding the trigger down wastes gas without pouring faster. Pour in stages rather than trying to fill a large glass in one go.

Step 4: Stop and remove

To stop the flow, tip the bottle upright while keeping the spout over the glass, so the last drops fall in the glass rather than on the table. Then hold the bottle with one hand and firmly pull the system straight up and off in one fluid motion. The cork closes behind the needle.

A few drops can fall from the needle after removal. In the Vinabox Six+ review, Jeremy notes keeping a cloth nearby for exactly that reason. Store the bottle as you would any cork-sealed bottle, in a cool, dark place; our guide on storing wine at home covers the basics.

Step 5: Clean the system

Coravin's instructions call for rinsing the spout and clamps with warm water, drying them thoroughly, then quickly pressing and releasing the trigger to clear any excess water. Do not press the trigger while the spout is under the tap. Cleaning after each session, especially when switching from red to white, avoids off flavors and sticky residue.

If the needle clogs with cork or sediment, use the needle clearing tool supplied with the system to push the debris through the eye of the needle. A damaged or bent needle should be replaced following Coravin's needle replacement instructions.

How does Coravin work?

The principle is simple. As wine leaves the bottle through the needle, argon from the capsule takes its place. Argon is an inert gas that does not react with the wine, so the remaining wine is not exposed to the oxygen that would normally enter when a cork is pulled. Because a natural cork is elastic, the tiny hole left by the needle closes up after the needle is withdrawn. That is why Coravin describes Timeless as suitable for revisiting compatible bottles over months or years, a claim that depends on the cork, correct use and storage.

Timeless or Pivot: which instructions apply to you?

Everything above applies to Timeless models. Coravin Pivot+ works differently: you remove the cork, fit a Pivot stopper, click the device into the stopper, tip the bottle and press a button to pour, then remove the device and close the stopper. It keeps opened still wine for up to four weeks, according to Coravin. See our Coravin Pivot+ guide for details, and the Timeless Three+ vs Six+ comparison if you have not chosen a model yet.

Common problems and what to check

Problem What to check first
No wine comes out The capsule may be empty; the needle may be clogged with cork; make sure the needle went all the way through the cork and the bottle is tilted with the spout below the bottle.
Wine pours very slowly Use short presses; check for a partial clog; make sure the bottle is tilted enough for the spout to point down into the glass.
Hissing when the needle is out A short burst of gas is part of loading a capsule and clearing water. If hissing continues, check that the capsule cup is screwed on with no gap, as the loading steps require, and contact Coravin support if it persists.
Cork crumbs in the glass The insertion was probably not one smooth motion, or the cork is old. Coravin sells a Vintage Needle for older, fragile corks.
The cork moved into the bottle The cork is likely deteriorated. Treat the bottle as opened and finish it within a few days.

If a problem persists, contact Coravin support with the model name. Keep capsules, needles and accessories matched to your exact system.

Frequently asked questions about using a Coravin

How do you use a Coravin for the first time?

Load an argon capsule and release a short burst of gas, fit the bottle sleeve, clamp the system on the neck and push the handle down in one motion. Tilt the bottle over the glass, press and release the trigger to pour, tip the bottle upright to stop, then pull the system straight up.

How long does wine last after using a Coravin?

With Timeless on a natural cork, Coravin says the remaining wine can be revisited over months or years when the system is used as directed and the bottle is stored well. With Pivot+, the claim is up to four weeks for opened still wine.

Can you use a Coravin on a screw cap bottle?

Yes, but only after replacing the original cap with a Coravin Timeless Screw Cap and following its instructions.

Does Coravin work with synthetic corks?

You can pour through some synthetic corks, but Coravin states that Timeless will not reseal them, so the wine should be treated as an opened bottle.

How many glasses do you get from one Coravin capsule?

Coravin says up to about 15 glasses of 150 ml (5 oz) per capsule with Timeless and about 20 with Pivot. Pour size and technique change the result.

Should you store the bottle on its side after using a Coravin?

Store it as you would any cork-sealed bottle you plan to keep: in a cool, dark place, on its side for long storage so the cork stays moist, unless your system's instructions say otherwise.
