California 2026 Harvest Starts Early as Growers Report Lighter Crops

The essentials in 30 seconds

  • Where: California wine regions, including Sonoma, Napa and Paso Robles.
  • Timing: Growers reported an unusually early start to the 2026 harvest.
  • Outlook: The Wine Institute expects lighter crops in several areas, but its final statewide report is still to come.

California's 2026 wine grape harvest began early, and growers in several regions are reporting lighter crops. In a vintage preview published September 30, the Wine Institute gathered accounts from wineries in Sonoma, Napa, Mendocino and Paso Robles. These are observations from producers during harvest, not a final statewide production estimate.

Why picking started early

According to the Wine Institute, unusually warm weather in March pushed the growing season forward. Rain and strong winds during spring flowering then disrupted fruit set in several regions. The organization says some vineyards had smaller clusters and uneven berry development. Growers adjusted picking dates as grapes ripened ahead of their usual schedule.

The regional dates show how varied that schedule became. Some South Central Coast vineyards began picking in late June. Bonterra Organic Estates in Mendocino County started with Pinot Gris on July 22, nearly two weeks earlier than in 2025. In the Russian River Valley, some vineyards had finished by mid-September. None of those dates should be read as a single harvest start or end date for the whole state.

What Sonoma and Napa growers are seeing

In Sonoma County, Bacigalupi Vineyards reported small Pinot Noir berries and clusters. Its general manager linked them to intense flavors and deeper color in the fruit. That is a producer's assessment at this stage, rather than a tasting verdict on bottled 2026 wine. If Pinot Noir is your reference point, our Pinot Noir guide explains the grape's usual range of styles.

In Napa Valley, Crosby Roamann described an early start followed by mild summer conditions that helped fruit ripen evenly. Farther south, Tablas Creek Vineyard in western Paso Robles reported a first Viognier pick on August 7 and encouraging color and flavor in its Rhône varieties. Those reports show different local conditions within one broad California story.

What the preview cannot tell you yet

The Wine Institute describes the 2026 crop as lighter in parts of the state and says its fuller California harvest report will follow later in the fall. It does not provide a final statewide tonnage in this preview. For now, you can follow regional reports and producer assessments, while keeping the harvest's size separate from claims about the quality of finished wine.
