Buying wine in Australia: shops, online and delivery

Vinabox Australia

Compare the exact bottle and the final order terms. Your postcode, local restrictions and the way an order is delivered matter as much as a shelf price.

Route What it helps you compare Before ordering
Dan Murphy's A broad Australian bottle-shop catalogue Enter your location and check the vintage, stock and delivery terms.
BWS Local bottle-shop options and online ordering Availability and delivery depend on the address and the relevant rules.
Liquorland Coles Liquor's current retail offer Check the actual store and listing rather than relying on an old Vintage Cellars page.
Independent wine shops Specialist advice, regional selections and imports Ask who the importer is and how older stock has been stored.
Winery cellar doors The producer's range and information about a specific wine Check current visit arrangements, freight, minimum orders and any club commitments.

Vintage Cellars is a familiar historical name, but Coles announced its national move to Liquorland, Liquorland Cellars and Liquorland Warehouse in March 2025. Use the current Liquorland service and store details. The existence of private retailers does not remove local licensing and delivery restrictions; there is no single national government bottle-shop monopoly.

What to compare before paying

  • The exact producer, wine name, vintage and bottle size. A case price may be shown alongside a single-bottle price.
  • The delivered total in AUD, including any compulsory charges, and whether a price requires membership or a minimum quantity.
  • Whether an unavailable vintage can be substituted and whether you can decline the change.
  • Delivery eligibility for your postcode, age-check requirements and who can receive the parcel.
  • The seller's policy for heat damage, breakage, returns and a failed delivery.

No wine prices are quoted here because a location-specific bottle-and-vintage offer has not been verified. A dated equipment price appears in the Coravin comparison. No Australian discount code or affiliate saving is promised.

Age and delivery: check your jurisdiction

You must be at least 18 to buy alcohol. Do not arrange for a minor to receive an alcohol order. Rules can differ between same-day and other delivery services, and restricted areas may exclude delivery altogether.

A consumer overview, checked 20 October 2026
State or territory What to check with the licensed seller
NSW Same-day delivery requires purchaser and recipient age checks, adult handover and no unattended delivery.
Victoria Same-day orders cannot be left unattended. First orders, repeat orders and gifts have different handover requirements.
Queensland Check the seller's licence and delivery conditions. Interstate online fulfilment has its own conditions; do not assume every delivery method is equivalent.
Western Australia Packaged-liquor delivery safeguards apply. Ask about ID, receipt and local restrictions before authorising a delivery.
South Australia Direct-sale deliveries have adult-recipient evidence and declaration requirements.
Tasmania Online licensees must display their licence number and approved warning, obtain age information and give delivery instructions.
ACT The Liquor Act 2010 applies. The 2025 delivery reform Bill was still listed before the Assembly when checked; proposed controls are not described here as current law.
Northern Territory An interstate delivery retailer needs an NT licence. Restricted-area permits and the Banned Drinker Register can affect supply.

The official sources below provide the detail. A merchant's promise of Australia-wide delivery does not override the law or establish that your address is eligible. Vinabox does not take orders or arrange deliveries.

Buying French wine in Australia

Compare the actual importer and Australian stock, not a French shelf price converted into dollars. French labels often lead with the appellation: use the grape guides to connect Chablis with Chardonnay or northern Rhône wines with Syrah. Confirm the vintage and ask about provenance for an older bottle.

A domestic Australian merchant handles a different purchase from ordering directly from overseas. Direct import can involve additional tax, freight and border requirements; obtain the relevant current information before choosing that route.

Avoid buying only for a claimed saving

Set a budget and decide the style and quantity you actually want. A larger case is useful only if you have suitable storage and want those bottles. Our region guide and grape guides help you narrow the search without depending on a promotion.
